Katonah Fire Department and Katonah-Bedford Hills Ambulance Corps teamed up Monday night for an extrication drill using two vehicles donated by the Christofferson and DeAlto families. Rescue Company Captain John Whalen and Lieutenant Mike Lehrer set up the challenging drill, arranging a mini van on top of a sedan, and positioning victims inside. KFD and KBHVAC members practiced extensively on the setup, despite the oppressive humidity. KFD members stabilized the vehicles and ensured they were safe. Then, rotating teams of KBHVAC members assessed the patients and removed them from the vehicles. KFD members used cutting and spreading tools to help KBHVAC members access the vehicles and get to the victims. Following the evolution, a debrief was held to go over what had been done. The drill provided a valuable chance to enhance the KFD-KBHVAC partnership and improve on both agencies' members' skills, and we look forward to more partnership opportunities in the future.
