Members of Katonah Fire Department, along with Tanker 6 and Rescue 17, participated in a live burn evolution, which took place in a donated home at 419 Harris Road. The Winchester family donated the structure to the Bedford Hills Fire Department, and that department invited its neighbors to take part in some valuable live fire training. Evolutions consisted of roof operations, basement search and rescue, fire attack and extinguishment, and safety and backup line operations. There was also a forcible entry simulator that allowed firefighters to practice forcing open a door. Teams of firefighters from Katonah, Pound Ridge, North White Plains, Yorktown and Bedford Hills rotated through these evolutions. Certified Fire Department Trainers lit live fires throughout the house and monitored the crews carefully as they experienced the heat, smoke, limited visibility, and overall hazard of a real house fire. Donated structures provide priceless training opportunities for fire departments, and today's event resulted in 20 separate live fire training evolutions for participants. KFD wants to thank BHFD for inviting us to this terrific training!
