An SUV donated by a Katonah resident provided valuable MVA/extrication experience for KFD members at our weekly Monday night drill. The car was positioned on its side and two dummies were placed inside in the front seat simulating trapped motorists. Using both truck-mounted and portable extrication tools from Rescue 17, and under supervision from KFD captains and lieutenants, members practiced stabilizing the car with rescue jacks and cribbing, accessing the hood to make sure the battery was disconnected, and removing windshields, doors, and the car's roof in order to get to the victims. Anyone wishing to donate a vehicle to the fire department can send an e-mail to info@katonahfd.org or chief2211@katonahfd.org. We'll ask for the car's title, registration and key, and in return, you'll get a letter for tax purposes attesting to your donation to the fire department. Donated cars provide invaluable accident and vehicle fire training. Even better, we'll arrange to get rid of the car once we're done training on it.
