In preparation for a multi agency tabletop gas emergency drill, to be held by Con Ed later in the month, Katonah Fire Department reviewed its gas leak standard operating guide lines, and then conducted a practical evolution, simulating a gas leak at the training tower. Engine 115 laid in from a hydrant and deployed a pre-connected inch and three-quarter line while its crew used four-gas meters and a Sensit gas meter to search the tower. Communication was maintained between interior teams and Operations and Command. Meanwhile, Ladder 39 laddered the second and third stories of the tower for safety while Engine 115's crew was inside. Engine 117 set up as a source pumper. A victim was found on the third floor of the tower and was safely removed. Given the number of gas leak calls that KFD responds to each year, the evolution provided valuable training in terms of positioning apparatus, conducting a search, maintaining communications, and maintaining scene safety.
