By Ex-Chief Dean W. Pappas
May 4, 2018

Katonah Fire Department experienced a busy afternoon Thursday, responding to four separate incidents. At approximately 2:15 p.m., KFD was dispatched to an MVA on I-684 NB near Exit 6. Rescue 17 and Engine 115 responded and were on scene for about 45 minutes assisting. Units went back into service, only to be retoned for the same incident a few minutes later when the tow operator reported that one of the cars involved in the original accident was now smoldering. Car 2211, Engine 115 and Tanker 6 responded and extinguished a small vehicle fire that had broken out. Once again, as Katonah units went back in service, a third alarm came in, for a six-car MVA on I-684, originally thought to be at mile marker 17.4. Rescue 17 responded along with Car 2211. The accident turned out to be at mile marker 14.7, in the Bedford Hills Fire District. Rescue 17 and Car 2211 continued in and assisted Bedford Hills units at that accident. The day was concluded with a wires down call following the line of thunderstorms that moved through the area around 6:30 p.m. Some power lines on Croton Lake Road were taken down by the wind and the downed wires started a brush fire. Engine 117, Engine 115, Utility 8 and Cars 2211 and 2212 responded. The fire was extinguished and units were back in quarters at about 9:30 p.m. The attached video indicates that it was dark by the time the scene was deemed safe enough to approach and extinguish the fire.

Units: Engine 115, Engine 117, Rescue 17, Utility 8, Car 2211, Car 2212
