At about 5 a.m today, Katonah FD was dispatched to I-684 South, north of the Route 35 overpass, to assist New York State Police with closing down all three lanes of the highway due to a one-car accident that severely damaged the Exit 6 road sign that spans all three lanes and was in danger of collapsing. The impact from the car dislodged the base of the sign on the left side from its bolted foundation and moved it forward, threatening its stability. Fortunately, the occupant of the car was not injured. While KFD's Rescue 17 and Car 2212 closed down the interstate near the U-turn, thus allowing backed up cars to turn around and head north, Golden's Bridge FD was dispatched to close the on-ramp from Route 138, and Croton Falls FD was dispatched to close the on-ramp from Hardscrabble Road and Route 116. This prevented additional traffic from getting backed up, as cars were directed off the highway at Exit 8. Units were on scene for about 3 hours before state DOT vehicles arrived, took over road closure, and began repairs to the sign.
