I-684 and Route 35 run right through Katonah Fire District. Unfortunately, that means a large percentage of our calls are vehicle accidents that sometimes require extricating occupants. Monday night's drill focused on extrication techniques. Members were drilled on safely approaching the accident scene, stabilizing the vehicle with wooden cribbing, cutting or disconnecting all battery cables, and then, using hydraulic spreaders, cutters (Jaws of Life) and rams, removing doors and the vehicle's hatch in order to better gain access to trapped occupants. The drill, led by Rescue 17 Captain Mike Lehrer and Rescue 17 Lieutenant John Whalen, provided many opportunities for our members to hone their motor vehicle accident extrication skills. Donated vehicles allow us to gain valuable real life practice for accidents and vehicle fires. If you are interested in donating your old vehicle, send an inquiry to info@katonahfd.org. Donations are tax deductible. And you might even get an invite to a drill to see us work on your donated car!
