A large brush fire in back of a residence on Cedar Road Monday afternoon posed challenges for Katonah FD and the numerous mutual aid fire units who provided valuable assistance. A National Guard helicopter initially spotted heavy smoke in the Cedar Road/Route 22 area around 3:15 p.m. After a fairly lengthy search, the fire was located behind 10 Cedar Road. Covering several acres, the brush fire extended from the back yard to the ridge line and involved a large log pile which proved hard to extinguish. Engine 116 and Tanker 6 established an initial water source in the driveway of 10 Cedar, and attacked the fire from that location. Soon, additional mutual aid units were arriving from a variety of Northern Westchester County fire departments. Golden's Bridge Tanker 1 and Bedford Hills MA-9 started attacking the fire from the adjacent home at 37 Cedar. Additional tanker units, brush trucks, and an all-wheel drive Gator vehicles provided additional support. A reliable water source was quickly established at the water treatment plant on Route 35, allowing tankers to dump their loads of water and refill quickly. The fire was brought under control around 6:15 p.m. and was finally completely extinguished by 7 p.m. Katonah FD wishes to extend sincere thanks for the incredible help provided by our mutual aid neighbors.
