Busy Sunday Morning for KFD

January 10, 2016

Sunday morning, January 10, turned into an incredibly busy morning for Katonah Fire Department. During an extremely heavy rain story, at approximately 8:30 a.m., KFD was dispatched to simultaneous alarms on North Salem Road and Beaver Dam Road. In each case, there was a report of power lines down and burning. On North Salem Road, the downed lines caused a series of brush fires. While the department was dealing with these alarms, a third alarm, again involving downed power lines and fire, was reported on Mount Holly Road. Soon, a fourth alarm came in for a similar problem on Edgemont Road. In each case, KFD units responded, assessed the situation, and contacted NYSEG. In the case of North Salem Road, KFD members extinguished a series of brush fires once NYSEG killed power to the downed lines. No sooner had units reported back in service from these alarms when Tanker 6 was dispatched mutual aid to South Salem for a smoke condition at John Jay Middle School, which turned out to be caused by an overheated motor in the school's HVAC system. The busy morning concluded with an automatic fire alarm at The Harvey School, which was caused by a power outage that occurred in parts of Katonah.
