On Monday, June 27, Katonah FD put two donated cars to good use, engaging in a challenging extrication drill involving the removal of victims from both cars, with one leaning precariously against the other. Firefighters in the drill practiced safe scene techniques, using cribbing, chains and rescue jacks to stabilize the vehicles, and then using various cutters, spreaders, saws and hand tools to gain access to the vehicles and safely remove the victims. The extremely valuable real-life drill sharpens our skills for handling serious motor vehicle accidents and we are grateful for the donations. Later this month, the two cut-up cars will be burned, giving KFD firefighters valuable car fire extinguishment skills training. KFD is grateful to the Erlanger family and the Cascioli family for donating their vehicles.
