On Monday, July 11, Katonah firefighters were able to get some valuable live fire training when two cars donated by the Erlanger and Cascioli families were lit on fire. The cars had been used in a previous drill for extrication practice. Rotating crews of firefighters were able to extinguish some raging car fires using both water and foam. The drill was carried out while members of the families who donated the cars watched. All told, three complete burn evolutions were carried out on the two cars, giving the participants some great training on safely approaching a burning car, and accessing the engine compartments and trunk areas where a lot of the fires tend to originate. Additional training was given to driver/operator trainees who are looking to become fire truck driver/operators from the department. Donated cars are a great way to provide realistic training for members, and are a good way for donors to get a tax break. Contact info@katonahfd.org if you think you are able to donate a car for us to use.
