Car Fire Drill Lights Up the Monday Night Sky

October 19, 2020

Last week, Katonah firefighters utilized a donated car to practice car accident extrication skills. Monday night, the car was put to further use as a prop for car fire training. Engine 115 and Tanker 6 were used for the drill. The participants were given an overview of how to safely approach a burning car. Hazards such as spilled fuel and other fluids, magnesium components in engines, exploding airbags and tires, overheated hatchback pistons that can shoot off like missiles, and exploding gas tanks are just some of the dangers awaiting firefighters responding to a motor vehicle fire. After going over the safety procedures, the car was lit on fire, and firefighters were able to get two burn evolutions out of it. In addition, several members received valuable training learning how to operate Engine 115's pump, flowing both water and foam through preconnected hose-lines. The drill underscored the value of donated vehicles for training purposes.

Units: Engine 115, Tanker 6
