On Tuesday evening, the Katonah Fire Department hosted a local Cub Scout group who were interested in learning about first responders in their community. The Scouts were eager to explore the firehouse and started asking questions the moment they arrived. After a quick walk around the engine room floor, the Scouts and Firefighters gathered to discuss how the department responds to emergencies. The Scouts learned about each apparatus and the different types of equipment they carry. Lt Michael Lehrer explained the various compartments on Engine 116 while fielding some very insightful questions. Lt Robert DeAlto brought the Scouts inside Rescue 17 where many were surprised to learn that we respond to non-fire emergencies. Firefighters James McHugh, Jr. and Mike Roper donned their fire gear and explained how each item provided protection in hazardous situations. Finally the Scouts and Firefighters gathered for one last round of questions with Lt Laurie DeRosa, who was responsible for organizing the visit. This firehouse tour marked our first tour since the pandemic started. We were proud to open our doors to such inquisitive minds and hope for more opportunities to share our knowledge and experience with others.
