Elevated CO in Apartment Building

April 1, 2015

On Wednesday evening, April 1, Katonah Fire Department was dispatched to 37 Wildwood Road on a report of a carbon monoxide detector activation with no symptoms. Upon arrival, Car 2212 made sure the occupants of the apartment were evacuated. Engine 115 and Rescue 17 arrived, and Car 2213 assumed operations while Car 2212 remained in command. Initial check of the building revealed elevated CO readings of 40 ppm. Subsequently, in gaining access to each apartment, a propane leak was discovered in an apartment 5of the building. Ladder 39 responded, and, as a precaution, 2213 requested Tanker 6 to respond and tie into a nearby hydrant to have a water source ready if needed. The propane supply to the building was shut off and the tank was secured. Car 2212 contacted the building's landlord and requested an emergency response from Halstead Quinn Propane Company. Meanwhile, interior crews set up a fan and began venting the structure. Units went back into service when followup investigation revealed no elevated CO levels. The scene was turned over to the landlord, and Katonah units went back into service after operating for a little over an hour.
