On what was the hottest day of the week, Thursday, April 16, Katonah Fire Department's Tanker 6 was dispatched at about 1315 as mutual aid to a working structure fire with entrapment in South Salem's fire district on Old Shop Road. Tanker 6 set up to supply water with other mutual aid tankers while its crew went right to work. Tanker 6's crew and SSFD firefighters climbed a ground ladder to perform a search and located a victim from a second floor bedroom. The victim was removed out the ladder to 2214 and other fire/EMS personnel who immediately began rendering aid.

The fire conditions, coupled with the hot weather, led to a second and third alarm being dispatched, bringing fire and EMS crews from as far north as Peekskill, as far east as Stamford, CT, and as far south as Scarsdale. Tanker 6's crew remained on scene assisting in fire suppression efforts until 1602.
