For the third year in a row, Katonah Fire Department teamed up with South Salem, Golden's Bridge, and Vista fire departments to bring Trial by Fire to John Jay High School. For two days--Wednesday, April 29 and Thursday, April 30, volunteers led John Jay High School students through three rigorous fire evolution stations during their PE classes. Students went through a dummy drag station, a donning turnout gear and running up and down bleacher stairs with a hose pack station, and a radio communications station. Kids competed for the much-desired "Trial by Fire" t-shirt.

The event was a fabulous success. We extend our sincere thanks to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Raymond Blanch and to the fantastic teachers and staff of John Jay High School for enabling us to do this for the third year in a row.

Trial by Fire is the brainchild of Katonah Fire Department member Laurie DeRosa. The idea of the program is to introduce young people to the volunteer fire service and possibly get them interested in joining. Over the past three years, Trial By Fire has netted the area fire departments several new recruits who have gone on to become active members.

The program's popularity is underscored by the extensive media attention it received from News 12 Westchester, LoHud, Halston Media and ABC Eyewitness News (clip is below).
