KFD members held a water rescue drill at the Katonah Pool Saturday morning. Members practiced the "reach, throw, row, go" approach to water rescue, and used the department's wet suits to practice rescue techniques. Additionally, a demonstration was given to show how a firefighter in full turnout gear and SCBA can breathe underwater if he or she were to fall into the water while wearing the gear. The drill provided valuable practice for us, as our fire district is surrounded by reservoirs containing water for the New York City water supply. Special thanks to Lieutenant Kate Hallex for organizing the drill, and to Bill Heidepreim and the TOB Recreation Department for allowing us to use the pool and for providing lifeguards during the drill.
