Katonah Fire Department is a satellite training center for the Weschester County Fire Academy. Thus, much of the training for each Firefighter 1, 2, and Survival Class, along with many other firefighting classes offered by the county, is completed at our headquarters. Today, KFD's Tanker 6 was used to demonstrate tanker operations to the current training class. Familiarity with tanker operations, from drafting, to pumping, to using portable water ponds, is a must in northern Westchester County, where many rural areas do not have fire hydrants. So large tanker trucks are needed to carry water supplies to fires in these outlying areas. Most of the fire departments in northern Westchester County have a tanker truck capable of carrying several thousand gallons of water. KFD's Tanker 6 carries 3500 gallons of water and 50 gallons of foam.
