By Ex Chief Dean W. Pappas
February 11, 2021

At about 11:00 AM Thursday, Katonah Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on I-684 North near the Route 35 overpass. Car 2212, Car 2213, Engine 116, Engine 115, and Rescue 17 responded. The accident resulted in a fuel spill from a truck that had overturned in the northbound lanes, and while firefighters extricated the driver, contained the spill, and established a safe zone, traffic was diverted off of the interstate at exit 6. During this accident, Katonah was also responding to an activated fire alarm on Maple Avenue. As a result of the two calls occurring simultaneously, mutual aid was called from Bedford Hills Fire Department (Engine 199) and Bedford Village Fire Department (Engine 110). The Maple Avenue alarm was deemed accidental, while the accident on I-684 was cleared by about 12:30 PM, with the Interstate reopening at that time.
