By Ex Chief Dean W. Pappas
February 16, 2021

Early Tuesday morning, at about 6 AM, Katonah Fire Department's Ladder 39 was dispatched, along with Bedford Village FD and Bedford Hills Fire Department Tanker 5, to a reported structure fire on Harris Road. Car 2041 (Bedford Village Fire Department) and Car 2032 (Bedford Hills Fire Department) reported a working structure fire in a five-bay storage garage next to a carriage house on the Harris Road property. The report resulted in a 10-75 being transmitted, resulting in additional resources from area fire departments being called. In addition to Ladder 39 and Tanker 5, KFD's Tanker 6, Bedford Hills' Engine 198, Bedford Village's Engine 109 and Engine 110, and Banksville Fire Department's Tanker 7 all responded. Tanker 5 and Engine 110 took up positions in the driveway in front of the structure. Ladder 39 backed in and its crew went to assist Engine 110's and Tanker 5's crews with fighting the fire. Tanker 6's officer assumed scene command, as the fire was later determined to be in the Katonah fire district, while Tanker 6 stayed on Harris Road and fed water to Engine 110 and Tanker 5. Due to the piles of construction materials and firewood inside the structure, extinguishment and overhaul took several hours. One firefighter was injured and was transported to Northern Westchester Hospital Center with non life threatening injuries. Crews finally left the scene at 9:40 AM. Then, while Katonah units were returning to quarters, they were diverted to Railroad Avenue on a report of a tractor trailer smoking. It turned out that two of the truck's trailer axles had locked up, causing the burning and smoke conditions. Crews followed the truck to its final destination just down the road where the scene was turned over to the trucking company.
