Flashover Simulator Comes to KFD

By Ex Chief Dean W. Pappas
November 13, 2021

One of the greatest threats facing firefighters is the flashover. A flashover is the near-simultaneous ignition of most of the directly exposed combustible material in an enclosed area. So when the furniture and other items in a room all reach a combustible temperature at the same time, everything ignites at once. On Saturday, Flash Fire Industries brought their flashover simulator trailer to Katonah Fire Department to train our members, along with some members from neighboring departments, on what causes flashovers, and how to notice the warning signs of an impending flashover when fighting a structure fire. The first part of the training consisted of classroom presentations. The highlight was going into the simulator trailer and experiencing various fire conditions. The experience was incredible and eye-opening, and participants left the training armed with some very valuable skills that will help them immensely in an actual fire. Katonah Fire Department extends a sincere thanks to Flash Fire Industries for their comprehensive, thorough, and safety-oriented approach to the training.
