November 14, 2022

Sunday evening at about 8 PM, Katonah Fire Department was dispatched to a reported mulch pile fire at the Westwood Organic Recycling Center on Beaver Dam Road. Before this call came in, Bedford Hills Fire Department had been dispatched to a report of smoke in their district. Both agencies ended up at the recycling center and proceeded to set up operations to extinguish a fire that had broken out in one of the large mulch/wood debris piles that are on the property. As the situation unfolded, additional tanker trucks were called in from Golden's Bridge Fire Department and Somers Fire Department. Crews used a ground ladder to climb to the top of the burning mulch pile and extended lines to extinguish it. The tanker trucks provided a steady supply of water, and were refilled at a hydrant where Katonah's engine 115 had established a fill site. Firefighters were assisted by Westwood Organic Recycling personnel and equipment to help break up the pile and allow firefighters to get to the fire's source. Units were on scene until about 11:30PM.
