Katonah Fire Department volunteers were dispatched Labor Day morning for a report of a battery-powered lawn mower fire on Mustato Road. Cars 2211, 2212, and 2213 responded, Engine 116 and Tanker 6 operated. Upon arrival, the first Chief on scene confirmed the fire and contacted the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services Hazardous Materials Team in an abundance of caution due to the presence of burning lithium-ion batteries. Engine 116 stretched a 1 3/4 inch preconnected cross lay hose and quickly extinguished the fire; the hose line remained at the ready in the event of a secondary ignition. Tanker 6 arrived and tied its supply line into 116, ready to provide additional water if it was needed. Katonah Firefighters and members of the HazMat team worked in tandem to safely remove the batteries from the mower frame and pack the batteries for removal and disposal. Units were on scene for about three hours. KFD appreciates the assistance provided by the WCDES HazMat team members who responded.
